International agency evaluation: China becomes an undisputed leader in patent

 
The Intellectual Property and Technology Division of Thomson Reuters which is an international information service provider well-known for predicting Nobel Prize, recently released a research report, noting that the amount of Chinese invention patent application in 2013 was more than 600,000, which is the largest amount in the world’s total patent output, among which the overseas patent application of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., Alibaba, Lenovo, Tencent and other companies are in the forefront; meanwhile China is witnessed fastest growth of patents in pharmaceutical area.

The report named as "Innovation in China - China patent activity development trends and globalization of innovation" provides an overview of the pattern of China’s current patent, and describes the best practices in intellectual property strategy developed by enterprises and institutions in the emerging fields.

 
 
Beijing High People’s Court announcement on duty-performance of Beijing Intellectual Property Court

 
In accordance with the approval by the State Commission Office for Public Sector Reform, Beijing Intellectual Property Court has been established, with announcement of relevant matters as follows:

I. Beijing Intellectual Property Court starts to perform its legal duties from November 6, 2014.

II. In accordance with the "NPC Standing Committee decision on the establishment of intellectual property courts in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou" and "Supreme People’s Court regulations on jurisdiction of IPR courts in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou", Beijing Intellectual Property Court exercises concentrated jurisdiction of IP civil and administrative cases originally within the jurisdiction of Beijing’s Intermediate People’s Court.

III. The Intermediate People’s Courts in Beijing shall no longer accept IP civil and administrative cases from November 6, 2014. Before November 5, 2014, for IP civil and administrative cases indicted or appealed to the Intermediate People’s Court, if they have been filed but not yet concluded, the Intermediate People’s Court shall continue to hear; for those cases with submitted material for litigation or appeal but not yet filed, the Intermediate People’s Court shall continue to review, file and hear.

IV. The office address of Beijing Intellectual Property Court is No.18, Zhanghua Road, Haidian District, Beijing.

China, Japan and Korea will continue to enhance cooperation in the field of IP

 
Recently, the 14th Trilateral Policy Dialogue Meeting Between SIPO, JPO and KIPO was held in Seoul, Korea. Shen Changyu, Commissioner of State Intellectual Property Office of the P.R.C, led a delegation to attend the meeting, reviewing the progress in IP cooperation in the past year and exchanging views on the tripartite cooperation in the future, together with Kim Young-min, Commissioner of Korean Intellectual Property Office, and Hitoshi Ito, the Commissioner of Japan Patent Office. The three parties agreed that it benefits each other for China, Japan and Korea to continue to enhance cooperation in the field of Intellectual Property. During his stay in Korea, Shen Changyu also attended the Second IP Protection Seminar, jointly organized by Korean Intellectual Property Office, State Intellectual Property Office of the P.R.C and Japan Patent Office, and delivered a speech.

At the meeting, the three Offices carried out extensive and in-depth exchanges around cooperation in patent examination, patent information and document exchange, design, automation, exchange of review experts, human resources training and upgrading of trilateral websites and other areas. In addition, the three offices also reported their latest developments. After the meeting, the three Secretaries signed the "Meeting minutes of the 14th Trilateral Policy Dialogue Meeting Between SIPO, JPO and KIPO", announcing the official launch of upgrading of the cooperated website. The three Offices also decided that the next Trilateral Policy Dialogue Meeting will be held in 2015 in China.

 
 
Nature Index released: China ranks second in research output in the world

 
The Nature Index released by Nature Publishing Group on November 13 shows, according to the weighted scores, China is a global leader in high-quality research outputs, ranking second in the world after the United States. The contribution to science by Chinese Academy of Sciences and other research institutions is increasing and compelling.

The index facilitates the analysis of high-quality research output by more than 20,000 institutions worldwide. Meanwhile, to celebrate the release of the beta version of the index, "Nature" published the 2014 global supplement for Nature Index.

It is reported that the database of nature index has tracked the information of authors of about 60,000 high-quality research papers, covering more than 20,000 research institutions worldwide. The papers included in the nature index are taken from 68 kinds of natural science journals, which are recognized by researchers to publish their best research results.

 
 
Guangzhou Intellectual Property Court publicly selecting 10 trial judges

 
Guangdong Provincial High People’s Court issued an announcement on November 13 on its official website, announcing that Guangzhou Intellectual Property Court to be set up in mid-December will select 10 trial judges from courts at all levels in Guangdong Province, to ensure that the Intellectual Property Court can handle cases at its inception.

According to the "Decision on the establishment of Intellectual Property Court in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou" by NPC Standing Committee, Beijing Intellectual Property Court has been formally established in advance, while Guangzhou Intellectual Property Court is being prepared and will be inaugurated in mid-December.

 
 
Shanghai Pudong established Intellectual Property Office, integrating functions of patent, trademark and copyright enforcement

 
On November 16, the Intellectual Property Office was officially established in Shanghai Pudong, which is the first one established separately, integrating the functions of patent, trademark, copyright administration and enforcement. It will be officially in operation on January 1, 2015.

The reform of Pudong IP administration and enforcement system, on the one hand, integrates the functions of patent, trademark administration and enforcement at the level of Pudong New District, on the other hand, undertakes a part of the patent, copyright management and enforcement powers delegated by relevant departments in Shanghai, achieving centralized management and comprehensive enforcement of patent, trademark and copyright.

 
 
Lenovo completed the acquisition of Motorola Mobility

 
Recently, Lenovo announced the formal completion of the acquisition of Motorola’s mobile from Google, with a total transaction value of approximately $ 2.91 billion, which will be operated in the form of wholly owned subsidiary.

It is reported that, through the acquisition of Motorola’s brand and smart phone portfolio, such as Moto X, Moto G, Moto E series, as well as Motorola’s future product plans, Lenovo will become the world’s third-largest smart phone vendor. At the management level, Lenovo will operate Motorola in the form of wholly owned subsidiary, and its headquarters will continue to be based in Chicago. After the completion of acquisition, nearly 3,500 employees from around the world will join Lenovo.

Liu Jun, Lenovo’s executive vice president and president of Mobile Business Group, will serve as chairman of Motorola Mobility management committee. Rick Osterloh, Motorola’s senior executive, will continue as president and chief operating officer of Motorola. Lenovo is expected to promote Motorola business to be profitable within 4-6 quarters.

Google will retain ownership of the majority of Motorola’s mobile patent portfolio, while Motorola will get permission to use these patent portfolios and other Intellectual Property. Motorola will hold more than 2000 patents, a large number of patent cross-licensing agreements and Motorola Mobility brand and trademark portfolio.

 
 
Unitalen attended the 2014 China International Trademark • Brand Festival, awarded with "2012-2014 Outstanding Trademark Agency"

 
The 2014 China Trademark Festival sponsored by China Trademark Association was held on November 8 -10 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. Unitalen President Bradley Yu was invited to attend and was awarded with the "2012-2014 Outstanding Trademark Agency ".

The "2014 China Trademark Association Outstanding Member Agency Award" was initiated in September 2014 by China Trademark Association, evaluating by three time periods from January to August in 2012, 2013 and 2014, based on the number of trademark registration, opposition and assessment agented by the applicant, typical and successful cases, the number and amount of money involved, financial condition and social responsibilities. After rounds of initial evaluation, re-evaluation and announcement, 50 outstanding agencies were selected, Unitalen was among the final selection with stable development and excellent overall strength. Awarding Unitalen and other 50 agencies was an important matter of the China International Trademark Brand Festival.

In addition, in the 20th anniversary of China Trademark Association, Unitalen won the "Unit Contribution Award", and the President Bradley Yu won the "Individual Contribution Award".

 
 
Unitalen selected into "China Top Ten Patent Agencies" by MYSIPO

 
Recently, the selection of "China Top Ten Patent Attorneys" and "China Top Ten Intellectual Property Litigation Agents" launched by MYSIPO was announced in the "MYSIPO Annual Forum of 2014", with awarding ceremony on site.
